Flying V, Explorer, Firebird - An Odd-shaped History of Gibsons Weird Electric Guitars (Guitar Reference (Backbeat Books))

FEATURED Flying V, Explorer, Firebird – An Odd-shaped History of Gibsons Weird Electric Guitars (Guitar Reference (Backbeat Books))

(Guitar Reference). Until the launch of the Flying V and Explorer in 1958, electric guitars were supposed to look like…guitars. Suddenly, Gibson turned conventional design upside down, almost literally, by using straight lines and angular body shapes, changing the way electrics could look and, in the process, creating a set of rare future collectables. Flying V, Explorer, Firebird tells the story of those first peculiar instruments and goes on to describe Gibson’s second attempt at nonstandard designs with the Firebird of the early ’60s. The book shows how most of these were a commercial failure at first and goes on to detail the influence of the designs on guitar-makers such as Hamer, Jackson, Dean, Ibanez, and BC Rich, all of whom embraced Gibson’s original weird-is-good design ethic. In parallel with the story of the makers is an absorbing account of the players who discovered these odd-shaped instruments, including Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society), Edge (U2), and Rick Nielsen

The guitar is a musical instrument with ancient roots that is used in a wide variety of musical styles. It typically has six strings, but four, seven, eight, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen and eighteen string guitars also exist. Guitars are recognized as one of the primary instruments in flamenco, jazz, blues, country, mariachi, rock music, and many forms of pop. They can also be a solo classical instrument. Guitars may be played acoustically, where the tone is produced by vibration of the strings and modulated by the hollow body, or they may rely on an amplifier that can electronically manipulate tone. Guitar chords can be represented in standard musical notation, tablature (frequently referred to as tab), or in chord diagrams.

Mahogany body and set mahogany neck with rosewood fretboard and 6-saddle string-thru-body hardtail bridge provide great resonance and longer sustain. Cast sealed tuning machines keep tuning spot-on while stunning transparent finishes let the brilliance of the maple figuring shine through. High-output tones are produced by EMG 81 and 85 humbucker pickups.EMG-85Although the EMG-85 pickup has more measurable output than the 81, its frequency response and string interface are different. The 85 uses two Alnico magnet-loaded coils with a wide aperture to maintain a beefy low end and a fatter top end. Because of a more natural tone, it works great as a rhythm and blues pickup because it has loads of output but isn’t muddy. It’s a perfect choice as a rhythm pickup in combination with an 81 in the bridge. The midrange h
